  • Check at the end of every month: add up the last 12 months. GOV.UK's rule counts taxable turnover, meaning everything you sell that isn't exempt from VAT, including zero-rated sales. It's turnover, not profit.
  • Also register straight away if you expect your turnover in the next 30 days alone to go over £90,000.
  • A guide, not tax advice. If you're close, talk to an accountant about timing and the Flat Rate Scheme.

How it works

At the end of every month, add up your taxable turnover for the last 12 months. If it's over £90,000, you must register within 30 days of the end of that month, and your registration starts on the first day of the second month after.

To look ahead, we take the average of your last three months and roll the 12-month total forward a month at a time: the oldest month drops off and a month at your recent pace is added.

Taxable turnover is everything you sell that isn't exempt from VAT. For most trades that's all of your work, including the materials you pass on.

Questions

Is the £90,000 threshold turnover or profit?

Turnover: the total you invoice, before costs. A tradesperson making £40,000 profit can turn over more than £90,000 once materials are included.

Is it the tax year or the last 12 months?

Any 12 months in a row, not the tax year. That's why you check at the end of every month.

What if I've already gone over?

Register as soon as you can. You'll owe HMRC the VAT due from the date you should have registered, and you may get a penalty. An accountant can help with the timing.

Can I register before I reach the threshold?

Yes, voluntarily. It can make sense if most of your customers are VAT-registered businesses that claim it back. For homeowners it usually means a 20% price rise or a smaller margin.
