  • Ads buy clicks. What a job costs depends just as much on the page people land on and on whether someone answers.
  • Profit after ads is jobs × job value × margin, less the ad spend. It leaves out your time.

How it works

  • Clicks = budget ÷ cost per click
  • Enquiries = clicks × share who call or send an enquiry
  • Answered = enquiries × share you answer or reply to in time
  • Jobs = answered × share that become jobs
  • Cost per job = budget ÷ jobs

The table changes one thing at a time: a page that turns half as many again of its visitors into enquiries, and answering every enquiry.

Questions

What's a good cost per job?

One that leaves you a profit once the job's materials and your time are paid for. Compare it with your margin on an average job, not with other people's numbers.

Why does the landing page matter so much?

You pay for every click whether or not they call. A page that shows the job, your price, your area and a big call button turns more of those clicks into enquiries, so each job costs less.

Where do I find my cost per click?

In Google Ads, under Campaigns, as 'Avg. CPC'. If you haven't run ads yet, Google's Keyword Planner gives a range for the searches you'd bid on.
