  • Charging for travel both ways means a job across the county pays the same as one round the corner.
  • Tell people the call-out price before you set off, and what happens if the job takes longer. It saves arguments on the doorstep.
  • You're not VAT-registered, so don't add VAT.

How it works

The call-out covers your time there and back, the miles, and the time on site it includes (often the first hour).

  • Time = hourly rate × (time on site included + travel both ways)
  • Mileage = miles each way × 2 × running cost per mile
  • Call-out = time + mileage, rounded up

Evenings, weekends, nights and bank holidays use your rate plus the extra you set. Extra hours on site are charged at the rate for that time of day.

Questions

Should the call-out include the first hour?

Many trades include the first half hour or hour, so a small job is one clear price. If yours doesn't, say so plainly: 'call-out £60, then £45 an hour'.

What should I charge for nights and bank holidays?

It's your call. Price it so you're glad to get out of bed for it, and tell people the price before you set off.

Do I charge the call-out if I can't fix it?

Decide in advance, then say it on the phone and on your page. People accept a call-out charge they were told about. They argue about one they weren't.
